About The Barn

The Barn on the Bend has a story to tell. It begins at the turn of the last century, when it was common for barn builders to visit an area and share their skills to create the masterpieces which used to decorate our prairies.

Our barn was built west of Vermilion along the southside of highway 16 in the early 1900s.  It was standing tall when Harvey and Edith Anderson moved onto the property in 1944. For the next twenty years, the barn served as a workplace full of stalls for cattle & horses, as well as grain & hay storage. For the 8 Anderson children, it was also a beloved playscape, and the rope swing they hung remains in the loft today.

In 1972, the barn was sold.  Ronnie Mix lifted and moved it to the picturesque place where it now sits, just five minutes from historic downtown Vermilion. In this new home, the barn has housed teams of working horses, foaled out mares and even hosted a horse sale or two in its day.

On my first visit to the grand, hay-filled loft of the barn a new dream was sparked. The architectural elegance and classic prairie views needed to be shared. With so many of these prairie landmarks vanishing,  a local team of passionate tradesmen provided their skills and expertise to honour this piece of our history. The barn and its surroundings have been refreshed for the next 100 years of dreams and memories.

The main floor is 2100 sq feet, with a generous staircase leading to an additional 1600 sq feet in the loft. Gorgeous windows showcase a breathtaking view of the prairie landscape and allow natural light to flood the space, highlighting the incredible wood details in every direction. You can't take a bad photo in this barn!

The Barn on the Bend merges three major factors that move me: family, community, and agriculture. It inspired us to create an authentic space to host notable events and bring together people that matter to each other. As a new chapter begins in the Barn on the Bend’s story, we invite you to join us.
